The definition of success is as vast and varied as the individual defining it. Many people judge success from a financial perspective that allows for categories of “winners” and “losers” but there are some basic tenets that can be much more valuable than many outward, monetary symbols of success.
In the book Born to Win, Zig Ziglar provides a short list of characteristics common to success and they are very simply:
- Knowing you did a great job when you close the door to your office at the end of each workday and head for home
- Having a home and people to love
- Having the financial security to meet your obligations each month
- Having the kind of faith that lets you know where to turn when there seems to be no place to turn
- Having an interest or hobby that gives you joy and peace
- Knowing who you are, and Whose you are
- Taking good care of you and waking up healthy
- Slipping under the covers at the end of the day and realizing with gratitude that “It just doesn’t get much better than this!”
Applying these principles of success to our everyday lives can change our perspective and go a long way toward achieving contentment and happiness.
